Cosmetic formulations are often quite sophisticated as they must provide a very distinct (and constantly evolving) aesthetic, be fully biocompatible, and stay in place without transferring to other surfaces yet be easy to clean off.  Products are also typically offered in an extensive variety of options to meet the needs of each individual.  (In some cases, premium one-of-a-kind products are custom formulated at the point of purchase specifically for that customer!)  Even within the broader headings of lipstick, mascara, nail polish, foundation, blush, etc., ingredients share little in common from one brand to another.  Cosmetic Chemists certainly have their work cut out for them!

One thing that is shared among these products and formulations is the requirement for mixing & dispersion during the formulation and manufacturing processes.  This is because pigments and performance enhancing additives such as emulsifiers, moisturizers, film formers, waxes & oils, etc. must be properly dispersed to provide the desired effect.  A powerful mixer that can provide variable amounts of shear, depending on the product requirements, is important.   Mixing in single-use containers is also extremely convenient and helps avoid cleaning when formulating the many iterations that are often necessary to optimize a product.
